Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov Resigns

Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov resigned today, while the parliament revoked the anti-protest legislation in two moves that may just put an end to the social and political crisis the 45 million people nation is going through.

The moves were concessions made to protesters and the opposition who have been fighting police forces for the better part of the last 10 days after peaceful protests generated by Yanukovych ignoring a deal with the EU in favor of closer ties to Russia, turned violent due to an ill-timed police intervention.

Riots became even more violent when parliament tried to pass legislation that made protests basically illegal with participants risking serious jail sentences. Protesters are asking for more transparency, a better justice system, closer ties to the European Union and better paying jobs.

President Yanukovych accepted Azarov’s resignation but asked the contested politician to remain in office until a new government is formed. Opposition forces as well as protesters didn't seem to impressed with the resignation of Azarov and are still asking for the resignation of President Yanukovych and new elections to be held.

Azarov was one of the most hated political figures in past months, partly due to his poor command of the Ukrainian language and partly because of the way he managed protests, calling participants extremists. He is also accused by the current opposition of poorly managing Ukraine’s economy.
