Hamid Karzai Held Secret Negotiations With Taliban Forces
It has been confirmed that Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has been holding secret negotiation with Afghan Taliban forces. The purpose seems to be a peaceful ending of the current wave of violent attacks that have increased as presidential elections are coming up in April.
Karzai’s spokesman supposedly confirmed the allegations and said that the Afghan president has been talking to undisclosed Taliban leaders for the better part of the past two months. Afghan officials also added that the negotiations haven’t been successful although it is assumed that they are the reason behind President Karzai’s increasingly hostile approach towards the United States.
Karzai’s refusal to sign a bilateral security deal with the U.S. marked the beginning of tenser relations with the Obama administration resulting in cuts for civilian assistance as well as cuts in military supplies to the poorly manned and equipped Afghan army.
The entire U.S. mission in Afghanistan is in danger of being aborted if a deal isn't struck soon; leaving Afghan forces to fend for themselves against what is an increasingly hostile Taliban presence.
Hamid Karzai’s negotiations have proven to be less successful than the president initially hoped with Taliban’s reiterating that they will do everything in their power to derail the April 5th elections, the third round of elections held since the U.S. military intervention.
