RT News Anchor Quits Due To Pro Putin Agenda
With news network Russia Today being increasingly criticized for its pro-Putin agenda, especially with the start of the Crimean situation, news anchor Liz Wahl quit live, on the air this Wednesday.
She argued that the main reason for quitting was the pro-Putin agenda and the way the network “whitewashed” the situation in Crimea, a district with a significant Russian minority in the sovereign state of Ukraine.
Wahl resigned just days after another news anchor, Abby Martin resigned on the air saying that Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine is wrong. The two resignations come as the network is being increasingly criticized for its portrayal of the Crimean invasion as a necessary and positive action.
Officials of RT said that Wahl’s resignation is a “self-promotional stunt” aimed at getting some of the attention that Abby Martin received. Wahl later appeared on CNN to explain her decision and talk about how the propagandist nature of the network came out in full effect after the invasion of Ukraine. She added that it’s clear that RT “is not about the truth” but focuses on promoting Putin’s agenda.
Russia Today is well known for adopting an anti-American agenda, however, things seem to have escalated since the stand-off between western powers and Russia on the Ukrainian invasion. The network has been founded in 2005 and is available to nearly 650 million viewers in over 100 countries.
