Stooges’ Scott Asheton Passes Away At 64 Years Of Age
Scott Asheton, drummer for the legendary band The Stooges has passed away at the age of 64. His publicist Michele Adler confirmed the news this Monday without adding any other details.
Former band mate Iggy Pop said via Facebook that Asheton was one of the greatest drum players of all time. The former Stooges singer also added that he has never heard anyone, before or since who played the drums with "more meaning.”
Asheton was one of the band’s original members since their formation in 1967 in Ann Arbor Michigan. His brother, Ron Asheton was another original band member who played the guitar. He passed away in 2009.
Iggy Pop called Asheton "his brother" saying that both him and his brother Ron left a fantastic musical legacy to the world. He also said that the two of them were like a second family for him, wishing condolences to Asheton’s sister, wife and daughter. Asheton suffered from an undisclosed condition since 2011 when he couldn't play a festival in the U.K. after a troubled plane ride from the U.S.
The Stooges, while not achieving great commercial success, were one of the most influential bands in punk history inspiring artists from Sid Vicious to the Ramons to Patti Smith.
