The “Captain America: The Winter Soldier“ recorded the biggest debut for the month of April as it copped $96.2 million in the first weekend of the month. The April debut surpassed the 2011 record of Fast Five, which copped $86 million during the last weekend of April. It also met the expectation of analysts.

Box Office Prophets analyst David Munpower said Disney placed another Marvel film up on the flagpole and all of North America saluted. The debut of the movie allowed the industry to maintain its pace as sales remain around ten percent higher than the same period a year ago.

Box Office Mojo analyst Ray Subers said “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” has benefitted from the success of “The Avengers,” which raked in $623 million when it was released in 2012.

Subers added that Winter Soldier was considered as a continuation of the storyline of “The Avengers” rather than a sequel to the individual story of the superhero. It was similar to “Thor: The Dark World” and “Iron Man 3.”

Subers also said the performance of the movie gives an indication of the influence of “The Avengers.” Critics also played a role in the influence as 80 percent of reviewers endorsed the movie. Around 95 percent of fans also enjoyed the movie, which earned an A-rating from the audience.

The commercial and critical feedback allowed Captain America to join the ranks of A-list superheroes such as Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Iron Man, and the X-Men

The movie did not encounter any rivals on the big screen since there was no other major movie opening at the same time. “Noah” came in second as it copped $17 million, which brought its total for ten days to around $72 million. Third place went to “Divergent” with $13 million, while “God’s Not Dead” had sales of around $7.7 million.

Mumpower indicated that “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was the first real action blockbuster for the year, which could not be claimed by either “Noah” or “Divergent.”
