How To Train Your Dragon 2 Impresses At Cannes

After registering solid numbers and a solid fan base in 2010, the sequel to “How To Train Your Dragon” wants to set the bar higher. The animation movie premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and is now looking to take the Box Office by storm when it opens on June 13.

Specialists in the industry believe the sequel should easily top the first movie’s revenues as the brand’s popularity grew after its successful DVD release and 2011 Oscar nomination for best animation. The Cartoon Network show called “Dragons: Riders of Berk” was also launched in 2012 and generated even more interest in what was an unknown franchise just a few years ago.

But critics aren’t the only ones that are interested with the producers awaiting to see how the new story line and new characters are received by fans. The story will follow Hiccup and his dragon Toothless who are now five years older. The new movie will also introduce new characters like Eret, son of Eret who is voiced by Kit Harrington of “Game of Thrones” fame and Valka who will be voiced by Cate Blanchette and will be Hiccup’s mother.

Dean DeBlois, the director behind both movies said he managed to recruit Blanchett at the 2011 Oscars after telling her he wrote a part with her in mind for the movie’s sequel. Blanchett confessed that the original movie was a big hit with her three children and seemed to be delighted with her role.
