Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd Cop Grammy Nominations For 2016

While Taylor Swift got nods in the three major categories of the 58th annual Grammy Awards, Kendrick Lamar beat her as he got the most number of Grammy nominations for 2016. The hip-hop artists received a total of 11 nominations while Swift and the Weeknd received 7 nominations each.

The “1989” album of Swift was nominated for album of the year along with "To Pimp a Butterfly" of Lamar, "Beauty Behind the Madness" of the Weeknd, "Sound + Color" of Alabama Shakes and "Traveller" of Chris Stapleton. The record of the year nominees included "Blank Space" of Swift), "Can't Feel My Face" of the Weeknd ,"Thinking Out Loud" of Ed Sheeran, "Uptown Funk!" of Mark Ronson and "Really Love" of D'Angelo and the Vanguard.

Grammy nominations for 2016 song of the year include "Blank Space," "Girl Crush "Thinking Out Loud," "Alright" and "See You Again." The best new artist nominees included Tori Kelly, Meghan Trainor, James Bay, Courtney Barnett and Sam Hunt. The importance of Lamar was reaffirmed through his Grammy nominations for 2016 after he came up empty two years ago even though he received seven nominations even after he was critically-praised for his debut "good kid, m.A.A.d city."

The latest feat allowed him to surpass Eminem as the most nominated hip-hop artist for a single year.

Gerrick D. Kennedy of the LA Times said the achievement of Lamar is more impressive since his 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' album was so challenging and complicated that critics and fans “are still chewing on it” around nine months after it entered the market. The diversity of the field was praised by Neil Portnow president and CEO of Recording Academy, He said the way artists are pushing boundaries makes it an outstandingly solid year for music.

This situation is highlighted by a good number of newcomers in genres like pop and rock, which are typically filled with old artist. The best rock performance Grammy nominations for 2016 include Elle King, Wolf Alice, Florence + the Machine, Alabama Shakes and Foo Fighters. "Montevallo" of Sam Hunt, "Pageant Material" or Kacey Musgraves, "Traveller" of Chris Stapleton, "The Blade" of Ashley Monroe and "Pain Killer" Little Big Town received nominations for best country album.

Seth MacFarlane, creator of “American Dad!” and “Family Guy” received a nomination for the best traditional pop vocal album together with Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap, Barry Manilow, Josh Groban and Bob Dylan.

While Swift, Lamar and The Weekend received Grammy nominations for 2016, Adele was missing in the list despite selling 4.5 million albums within two weeks. Apparently Adele did not qualify for the Grammys this year since the nominees were artist who released songs from October 2014 until September 2015. Since the album of Adele was released in November, it will likely be included in the 2017 Grammys.

All of the 2015 releases of Drake did not make the cut in any of the top categories, Billboard Editor Joe Levy said. But, the hip hop star was able to get five Grammy nominations for 2016. Levy also said the cast album of the “Hamilton” Broadway hit was not nominated for album of the year, but it did receive a best musical theater album nomination. The 2016 Grammys will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 15, 2016.
