Courtney Love Settles Twitter Suit

Courtney Love, the widow of departed grunge singer Kurt Cobain, has settled a lawsuit filed against her by fashion designer Dawn Simorangkir about false statements made by Love via Twitter and MySpace.

The suit was filed by Simorangkir in March 2009. She met Love one month earlier to talk about making some clothes for the Hole frontwoman. According to the lawsuit, Love then posted messages on Twitter and MySpace accusing Simorangkir of being a criminal and a thief.

"Love mounted a malicious campaign to not only terrorize Simorangkir, but to ruin and destroy her reputation and livelihood," the court filing said.

Courtney Love has used the microblogging site in many separate occasions for posting profanity-filled tirades against lawyers and just about everyone who crossed paths with her.

"In order to show the world the comments were derogatory and completely illegal, it was imperative to my client to have the settlement be public," Simorangkir's lawyer Bryan J. Freedman said.

Originally to go on trial last month, the case was expected to be the first of its kind where a jury will determine if Twitter messages could constitute libel. But with the settlement, another case in the future would settle the matter as the use of Twitter continues to explode.

Courtney Love and her attorneys had wanted to keep the terms private but will instead have to go with a public statement to be released next week.

People may now think twice about posting unbridled messages on sites like Twitter after the case filed against Courtney Love.
