Denver Broncos Win Super Bowl 2016
The offense of the Carolina Panthers was effectively shut down by the defense of the Denver Broncos leading the way to victory for Denver in Super Bowl 2016. Linebacker Von Miller led the defense with three sacks and a pair of forced fumbles as the Broncos won, 24-10. At the end of the game, Denver tied the Super Bowl record of seven sacks, which was set by the 1972 Pittsburgh Steelers and the 1985 Chicago Bears.
While Carolina buried the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks on its way to the Super Bowl 2016, it was not able to break the vaunted defense of Denver. Denver has a successful offense at the start of the game as they reached the red zone and set up a 34-yard field goal.
The Panthers were unable to match the success of the Broncos after a disastrous first offensive possession giving Denver a 10-0 lead after Cam Newton was stripped by Vin Miller. Malik Jackson recovered the forced fumble that resulted to a touchdown.
The mistake was the first on many for Carolina as Mike Tolbert and Jonathan Stewart fumbled. Newton was able to complete eight of 19 passes during the first half for 95 yards. Despite this, the rushing ability of Newton allowed him to lead the Panthers offense at the start of the second quarter.
Even as the Broncos were given a number of opportunities due to the struggling Panthers offense, they were unable to capitalize on these chances. The touchdown of Jackson was the only one Denver was able to make until the Super Bowl 2016 ended. While CJ Anderson and Peyton Manning led Denver deep into the territory of Carolina, they were limited to the field goals of Brandon McManus.
Manning efficiently led the Broncos on the field as he completed thirteen of 23 passes for 141 yard. However, Manning made a number of dangerous passes, including on thrown at defensive end Kony Ealy of Carolina. Super Bowl 2016 may be the last game in the career of Manning.
Newton was able to complete long passes to Corey Brown and Ted Ginn Jr. near the start of the second half for Carolina. While these passes did not translate to points for the Panthers, the Broncos did not take advantage of this. It also gave the Panthers a number of chances in reducing the lead of Denver.
After the game ended, the 12 consecutive failed third down attempts of Denver set a Super Bowl record. However, the second forced fumble of Miller saved the game for the Broncos as he set up the two-yard touchdown rush of Anderson. Super Bowl 2016 was the third championship of Denver and the second for Manning, who also won a championship with the Indianapolis Colts.
