Ammonia Capacity Market 2017–By Identifying the Key Market Segments Poised for Strong Growth in Future

Global ammonia capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next nine years, potentially increasing from 238.3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2016 to 278.5 mtpa in 2025. Around 89 planned projects are slated to come online in the next nine years, primarily in Asia and the Middle East.

In the Middle East, Iran has 23 planned and announced ammonia projects, expected to start operations with a total capacity of about 9.7 mtpa by 2023. Capital expenditure (capex) for these projects totals US$2.68 billion over the next nine years.

• India has 15 planned and announced ammonia projects, with a total capacity of about 7.9 mtpa by 2022. India’s capex for these projects is US$7.25 billion.

• In the Former Soviet Union, majority of ammonia capacity additions are in Russia, with capacity of about 3.2 mtpa by 2018.
• In South America, major ammonia capacity additions are in Brazil, with planned and announced capacity additions of about 0.7 mtpa by 2019.
• In Africa, Nigeria plans to spend US$1.46 billion and add a capacity of about 3.5 mtpa, expected to come onstream by 2019.
• In Europe, Hungary and Slovakia together plan to spend US$0.28 billion and add a capacity of 0.7 mtpa, expected to come onstream by 2018.
