PlayStation Vue Price Reduced By $10

The price of the PlayStation Vue TV Service of Sony was reduced recently as the company aims to remain in the streaming video market. The basic “Access” package of the service is now priced at $40 for each month while the “Core” package went down to $45 per month. On the other hand the “Elite” package is now has a monthly fee of $55.

The basic package features over sixty live streaming channels while the “Core” package includes the live streaming channels of “Access” plus regional sports networks. The “Elite” package features over 100 channels.

Aside from the reduced monthly fee, a number of new channels from ESPN and Disney will be added to PlayStation Vue. The basic bundle will receive Disney Junior, Disney Channel, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN 2 and Freeform. On the other hand, the Core and Elite packages will also receive ESPNEWS, SEC Network and ESPNU. The Elite package will also receive the Fusion Network. ABC local channels will also be offered to selected areas, including Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Chicago.

While Sony is planning to add ESPN Goal Line, ESPN3, ESPN Bases Loaded, ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Classic and Longhorn Network to PlayStation Vue, no details were released by the company.

The streaming video service was unveiled by Sony in March 2015. It is cheaper compared to standard pay TV bundles and attempts to remedy some elements of cable TV. Live channels can be streamed by users through a Sony PlayStation console, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV devices, iPad and iPhone. They can also watch a number of shows on-demand. Shows are stored by the service on a cloud, which makes them available to all devices. The service also does not have any hidden fees, installation charges or rental expenses.

However, the multi-channel packages of the service are only available to a limited number of US markets, including Los Angeles, Dallas, New York City, Miami, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area and Chicago. Users outside these markets can only access a small selection of channels outside of a standard cable package.

PlayStation Vue could not fully launch due to this limitation. While subscriber numbers were not revealed by Sony, Recode indicated that the number of subscribers of the service is smaller compared to a good-sized college, citing industry executives. The price drop may make the service appealing to potential cord cutters. This is important for PlayStation Vue since the Sling TV service of Dish will have more channels while AT&T is set on establishing its own service before the end of the year.
