Afghan blasts kill one official and 2 NATO soldiers
Kabul, Afghanistan - The series of assassinations of high-profile Afghan officials continues after Payenda Khan, a senior intelligence official, was killed Thursday. Khan immediately died after a bomb explosion hit the northern province of Kunduz. Khan was the lone casualty of the blast while 3 were badly injured, all of them children. He was the latest victim of the series of killings involving high-profile Afghan officials.
The Taliban group had already claimed the responsibility for the said attack. Last July, Taliban group successfully assassinated Ahmed Wali Karzai, half-brother of the country’s president. He was considered as the highest profile political figure killed by Taliban’s continuous insurgency with the Afghan Government. Few days ago, 19 were killed and 37 injured after militants attacked the governor’s compound at the province of Uruzgan. 3 police officers were injured in the surprise attack by militants. The governor managed to escape the attack of the militants after several of his bodyguards were able to protect him.
2 NATO troop members were also killed Thursday in two different attacks across the eastern part of Afghanistan. The incident was already reported to the international media. The coalition forces of the United States have successfully captured a senior and high-ranking Haqqani leader. The group is affiliated with terrorist group Taliban and is responsible for numerous deadly insurgencies across Afghanistan.
