Al-Qaeda Attacks Prisons In Iraq
In one of the most impressive and violent attacks in recent history, al-Qaeda members attacked the Abu Ghraib and Taji prisons. Locals that where near the scene said that they heard loud mortar explosions and a violent gun fight inside, while aircrafts cluttered the night sky.
Al-Qaeda said that the attack was a coordinated assault that resulted in the freeing of 500 prisoners and the death of more than 120 guards and SWAT officers. Baghdad government officials said that the number of freed prisoners is much lower and that only 25 Iraqi guards were killed along with 10 attackers and 21 prisoners.
International observers warn that the level of violence in Iraq is escalating and it can bring the country in a state of civil war if no official measures are taken.
Interior minister Wissam al-Firaiji said that the militants were very well armed and that in the case of Taji prison, 9 suicide bombers and three car bombs driven by suicide bombers were used.
First reports of the violent incident suggest that the attackers were helped by guards inside the two prisons.
A terrorist organization called the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant formed by al-Qaeda members from Iraq and Syria claimed the attacks this Tuesday in what seems to be an organized campaign to free all terrorist members currently held behind bars.
