Android TV App Launched By Sling TV

An app for the television platform of Google, the Android TV, was launched recently by Sling TV. The move makes the platform friendly to people who have already cut the cable. The online television service offers over twenty live channels, including ESPN, CNN, TNT and the Food Network, at a monthly fee of $20.

Aside from the basic services, users can also include channel packs for an additional $5 per month. HBO can also be added by users for a monthly fee of $15.

The operator of Sling TV, Dish Network, promised the release of an Android TV application for the Google device since the start of the year. The service is already available through Android and iOS devices as well as PCs, Macs, the Xbox One, Amazon Fire TV and Roku.

Two Android TVs are currently available in the market, the Nexus Player of Google and Forge TV of Razer. The $99 Google device is a standard media streamer featuring a voice-controlled remote. On the other hand, the $100 Razer device offers gaming options and is expected to offer an application that allows PC games to be streamed through a networked computer. Nvidia is currently developing its own Android TV offering 4K video support as well as gaming options.

The Nexus Player is being offered with a 50 percent discount by Sling TV together with a three-month service subscription. The Roku and Fire TV of Amazon are also being offered at discounted prices by the service.

The importance of the release of the app for the Google device lies on the lack of features on the Android TV when compared to its rivals. The release of the app by Sling TV may give the device a boost particularly with the rumored release of the Apple TV during the I/O conference next week.
