Asus May Produce Its Own Version Of The HoloLens
It appears another company may produce the HoloLens of Microsoft in the near future. Asus is reportedly discussing with the software giant about producing its own version of the augmented-reality glasses. Jonney Shih of Asus and Microsoft executive vice president for Windows and devices Terry Myerson made the revelation recently.
The interest of the sixth largest PC manufacturer in the world in becoming the first company outside of Microsoft to produce the device may enhance the augmented reality market. Three-dimensional images are essentially projected in front of the eyes of the user and superimpose them on an actual environment. For the moment, the device has yet to enter the market.
A version designed for software developers will be released by Microsoft in 2016. This particular version has a price tag of $3,000. Releasing this version is aimed at encouraging developers to create applications for the HoloLens that are appealing to consumers.
Since Asus is known for offering affordable PCs in the market, it is expected to produce versions of the device affordable to ordinary consumers. Microsoft is hoping for an increase in the adoption of the technology following its introduction in January.
Myerson said everything in the hardware they are working on is based on how the Windows ecosystem can be developed further. This is the reason why Microsoft is investing on the technology. Myerson added that Shih will have the final say on whether the Taiwan-based company will produce its own version of the device or not. Shih is currently assessing the type of augmented-reality glasses Asus will produce.
While Myerson did not reveal when Microsoft will offer a cheaper version of the device, he said there will be signs when it will be ready for release into the market. He said when his children cannot stop playing Minecraft on the device it will be ready for the players of the popular game. The HoloLens version of Minecraft has so far impressed a good number of people.
