Booker Prize Finally Held by Barnes

London — Julian Barnes, British writer, has won the Booker Prize in literature Tuesday. It was his first win in 4attempts as he only ended up as finalists in 3 other previous occasions. The contest has been plagued with controversies, bitter accusations and insults.

Barnes had even negatively commented on the contest saying it’s a posh bingo before he finally took home the prize of about $82,000 or 50,000 pound this time around. His entry, The Sense of an Ending, has impressed the panel of judges. Stella Rimington; former British spy and now a thriller writer, was one of the judges who were impressed by Barnes’ 150 pages novel.

The novel is very incredible, an archetypal book of this day and age, Rimington quoted. It is an attempt to examine how unreliable our memory is and that we have little idea of who we really are. It was written exquisitely, plotted subtly and revealed new and exciting depths for each page you are reading, she said.

Barnes, 65 years old, was also nominated 3 times already for the same award. The first was in 1984 for his novel Flaubert’s Parrot, in 1998 for England, England and in 2005 for Arthur and George. He failed to win the top plum in the past 3 instances and was very disappointed saying all forces are working against him. It was almost a complete havoc for him. Winning the 2011 Booker Prize delighted Barnes so much. He thanked his publishers and the sponsors for their endless moral and financial support.
