Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's engagement could be a long one. A month after the actor slipped a custom-designed diamond ring on Angelina’s finger; he says they aren't rushing to walk the aisle yet.

"We actually really, truly have no date," Pitt, who is promoting his new gangster flick "Killing Them Softly," said at a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday. He also announced that they are not abandoning their previous position that they would like same-sex marriage to be legalized before they get married.  "We're still hoping that we can figure out marriage equality in the states before that date."

As for why, after only seven years and six kids together that they decided to get engaged, Pitt said it was all about the timing. "It's just something that makes sense to us," he noted.

Pitt, who was casually dressed for the event in a grey suit and white T-shirt, said he's flying solo at Cannes this year because Jolie is too busy preparing for the shoot of "Maleficent," which Pitt said she starts very soon.

Though Jolie was not around, she was a frequent topic of the conversation. Pitt was also asked if he and Jolie, who fell in love on the set of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” while he was still married to Jennifer Aniston, would costar in another movie. He replied: "Yeah, we'd love to." It was rumored, though, that the supposed collaboration in "The Counselor" now looks like it’s Cameron Diaz, and not Jolie, will be playing the part instead.

In Pitt's upcoming movie "Killing Them Softly," he plays Jackie Cogan, who is a professional enforcer called in to investigate a heist that went down during a mob-protected poker game. Ray Liotta also stars.  The movie is directed by Andrew Dominik.
