Brian Hoyer, Special Teams Contribute To Cleveland’s Win Against Minnesota
Brian Hoyer may have a decent shot at becoming the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns following his recent performance against the Minnesota Vikings. Hoyer replaced Brandon Weeden in the game that the Browns won against the Vikings, 31-27.
Many fans assumed the Browns were making preparations in the 2013 season after it traded Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts. However, Hoyer made a number of plays in the first half as Cleveland led Minnesota 24-17 at the half. The quarterback finished 14-of-23 in the first half with 174 yards along with two touchdowns. One of the notable passes of Brian Hoyer in the first half was to Josh Gordon that resulted to a 47-yard score for the team. Jordan Cameron was also one of the targets of Hoyer in the first half. Hoyer finished with 30-of-54 for a total of 321 yards despite tapering off during the second half.
Although he slowed down in the second half, Brian Hoyer was able to respond to the 13 consecutive points of Minnesota with a touchdown pass to Jordan Cameron with less than a minute to go in the game.
Aside from Hoyer, the special teams also came through for the team. The team was able to successfully execute a fake punt along with the third touchdown of the team in the second half. The touchdown came off a play that appeared to have Billy Cundiff as the target for a field goal. However, Spencer Lanning threw an eleven-yard touchdown pass to Cameron.
Before the game started, reports emerged that the team was open to a Gordon trade. However, it appeared that Gordon gave enough reason for the team to keep him as he caught ten passes for 146 years. He also gave the team a touchdown in the first half. Although the Cleveland Browns showed that the team is looking forward to the next season, the performance of Brian Hoyer and the special teams gives an indication that the team is ready for the current season.
