Britney Spears faces suit as fragrance deal becomes stinky
Britney Spears and the pop star's father are facing a $10 million lawsuit filed against them by a marketing firm. Brand Sense Partners LLC said it got ripped off valuable money when Spears renegotiated a deal with cosmetics empire Elizabeth Arden in 2010.
In its court filing, the marketing company said it brokered the fragrance deal between Britney Spears and Elizabeth Arden in 2004, and was entitled to a 35 percent commission.
But last year during the launch of the singer's fragrance product Radiance, the singer's father Jamie Spears engineered a new deal which violated the original agreement, the lawsuit states.
Brand Sense is claiming at least $10 million and other damages from the singer. It is also seeking to gain commission from all Britney Spears-branded perfume made by Elizabeth Arden.
In recent years, the singer has been hospitalized for mental disturbance after going through a bitter divorce and custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline. She had also been to rehabilitation facilities.
Due to her personal struggles, a court in 2008 ordered her assets to be under a temporary conservatorship under the control of her father and an attorney.
The order has largely shielded the singer from other litigation. She earlier faced lawsuits filed by her manager and bodyguards but a judge has ruled that Spears cannot be compelled to testify.
Spears just released her seventh studio album "Femme Fatale" with the lead single "Hold It Against Me" hitting the number one spot in the Billboard Hot 100. It was the fourth number one single for Britney Spears.
