“Captain America” Tops Box Office Again

For the second consecutive week, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” topped the box office, beating “Rio 2” of Fox as it earned $41.1 million in the North American market. On the other hand, the animated movie placed a close second as it debuted with $39 million, according to Rentrak Corp.

The Walt Disney Co. production posted the biggest debut for the year, and showed that releases can be staggered by Hollywood to prevent cannibalizing sales of other movies. It also gives an indication of the continued commercial success of Marvel Studios, which produced a number of hits, including “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3.”

BoxOffice.com chief analyst Phil Contrino revealed the major takeaway is the movie showed that April is a huge month, which is good for the entire movie industry. The movie also emphasizes the fact that movies can still do well on the box office even if studios will spread movies throughout the entire year.

The confidence of studio was buoyed up to a point where the company has indicated that the third installment of the “Captain America” franchise will be released on the same day as the Warner Bros’ Batman/Superman movie in May 2016.

Box Office Mojo revealed that international sales of the movie have reached $477 million. BoxOffice.com indicated that ticket sales of the movie were expected to reach $43.5 million in its second weekend. Production costs of the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed movie reached $170 million.

Placing third was “Oculus,” which generated sales of $12 million for its first weekend on the big screen. The movie was expected to generate around $13 million in sales. Fourth place went to “Draft Day” of Kevin Costner, as it debuted with $9.8 million. BoxOffice.com expected the Lions Gate movie to earn $13.5 million for its first weekend in the market.

Revenue for the weekend of the top ten movies increased by 25 percent compared to the same period last year. Revenue reached $130.7 million for this year, led by “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
