Cardiovascular Diseases Prevented through Balanced Diet — New Study Finds

Cardiovascular diseases like myocardial infarction are the leading causes of millions of disability and deaths globally. A person’s health condition is determined by environmental factors and through behavior such as diet, smoking, physical activity, and alcohol consumption. However, genetic variations also play an important role.

That is the reason why a recent study has been conducted by a group of scientists to indentify and further study several genetic variants that increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Scientists have focused their study on chromosome 9p21 for individuals of different ethnic groups and also have tested its interaction with other factors in the environment. Chromosome 9p21 is one of the genetic variants that cause the development of cardiovascular disease.

In the study, scientists investigated the association of the said genetic variant to the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The group of researchers found out that the risk brought about by chromosome 9p21 can still be influenced depending on the diet consumed by each group of people in different ethnic groups. The effect of 9p21 can still be mitigated through the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. Genetic factor may play an important role for one to develop cardiovascular disease but the study suggests that an individual can always prevent the disease from developing through lifestyle change and by eating a balanced diet.
