Carmelo Anthony to be traded to the New Jersey Nets

The New Jersey Nets are set to acquire Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony via a trade, that would also send D.J. Augustin from Charlotte to the Nets in exchange for first-round pick Derrick Favors, point guard Devin Harris, and a future first-round pick, according to NBA sources.

Anthony agreed to sign a three-year $65 million extension, a condition the Nets insisted before the deal.

Details of the trade are yet to be finalized before the Nuggets' training camp starts on Monday.

“Any time you get a chance to get an All-Star, you have to go for it and that looks like what the Nets are doing,” said a coach of an Atlantic Division team who wish to remain anonymous. “And you have to give up something to get something. They did and still kept [Brook] Lopez.”

Anthony earlier voiced his preference to play for the New York Knicks but the team did not have the right contracts to make a deal. The All-Star then turned his attention to the Bulls who refused to part with Joakim Noah.

The Nets was seen as the next logical choice for Anthony out of Denver because the Nets plan to move across the river in Brooklyn in about two years.

Denver offered a maximum extension for their franchise player, but Anthony seemed decided to play elsewhere.

If the trade gets approved, the Nets would feature a front line of Anthony, power forward Troy Murphy, and center Brook Lopez.

As part of the four-team deal, Utah would send Andrei Kirilenko to Denver and get Boris Diaw from Charlotte and Quinton Ross from the Nets.
