Carnival Corp Considering Changes Following Carnival Triumph Incident

Carnival Corp is considering some changes to prevent the incident on the Carnival Triumph from being repeated, according to chief executive Gerry Cahill. The company began a comprehensive review on all of its ships.

Cahill indicated that the company will concentrate on what they experienced in the incident. Carnival Corp is also looking into other operational procedures that they can implement.

While sailing through the Gulf of Mexico, the engine room of the Carnival Triumph caught fire on February 10. Even though the flames were contained quickly, it also caused the ship to lose power used for air conditioning, lights, toilets and elevators. The kitchen equipment used in the preparation of hot meals and the freshwater systems were also affected.

Although some of the services were restored after some time, passengers indicated that the conditions were miserable during the time the ship was towed to shore.

The fleet-wide review of Carnival Corp will concentrate on four aspects that include preventing, detecting, and suppressing fires. The second aspect that will be checked is the redundancy integrated into the engine rooms of the vessels. It will also look into the possibility of adding facilities that will allow the hotel to run using an emergency generator. The last aspect that will be looked into by the company is its experience and the possible changes that will be made basing on the first three aspects.

Professionals from the shipping industry were also brought in by Carnival Corp. The teams are making the assessment in four locations, including the place where the Carnival Triumph was being repaired. The review comes as the National Transportation Safety Board, US Coast Guard, and the government of the Bahamas are investigating the fire.

The Carnival Triumph fire was caused by a source different from the fire that hit the Carnival Splendor in 2010. The Carnival Splendor fire was caused by a diesel generator failure, while the Carnival Triumph fire was caused by a leak in the fuel line.

Millions of dollars were spent by Carnival Corp following the Carnival Splendor incident that were used in implementing changes in its fleet.
