Chris Kelly Of Kris Kross Passes Away

One-half of Kris Kross, Chris Kelly, died recently at a hospital in Atlanta at the age of 34. The cause of death was unknown for the moment although an autopsy is set to be made by the Office of the Medical Examiner in Fulton County.

Chris Kelly and Chris Smith teamed up to form Kris Kross, a nineties rap duo whose popularity skyrocketed with “Jump” in 1992. It occupied the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks. Kris Kross became the opening act for the Dangerous World Tour of Michael Jackson on the same year.

They were also known for wearing clothes backward. Global Grind editor Michael Skolnik said that he will wear his clothes backward after he heard the news.

The two were discovered by Jermain Dupri at a mall in Atlanta in 1991. They were still 13 years old at this time. The stage name of Chris Kelly was Mac Daddy, while Chris Smith took up the stage name Daddy Mac. “Jump” was followed by another hit single, “Warm It Up.”

“Totally Krossed Out,” their debut album composed of their hit songs reached a multiplatinum status.

However their 1993 “Da Bomb” album was not as well-received as their debut album, mainly due to the fact that they already reached puberty and were promoted with a much tougher image.

Although they were not able to duplicate the feat of their debut album, they kept on making music. They were able to release the “Young, Rich and Dangerous” album in 1996.

Last February, the duo reunited for the 20th anniversary of the So SO Def label of Dupri. Among the performers during the anniversary party was Rapper Da Brat. Da Brat wrote about the death of Chris Kelly, indicating that it was not too long ago that they were just rehearsing for the show.
