Chromecast Dongle Offered At $5 For Its Anniversary

The Chromecast dongle is celebrating its first anniversary in the market, and as part of this celebration, Google is offering the streaming at $5 with three months worth of All Access streaming music.

The offer allows users to stream music and videos into devices that use Android or iOS-powered devices as remotes. Following its introduction into the market last year, the device was quickly sold out in inline stores. It also became a best-seller in the electronics category of Amazon.

The $5 price of the Chromecast dongle requires users to a subscription into the streaming music service of the company. The price does not include the three-month Google Play Music All Access subscription of $9.99 per month, which means users will have unlimited access to around 25 million songs for a total amount of around $35. Google Play Music All Access is Google’s version of Beats Music and Spotify.

A similar promotion was offered by the search giant last year when the device was unveiled. The promotion offers a three-month subscription to the streaming video service of Netflix at a price of around $11. The device was quickly sold out after around 24 hours after the promotion was announced.

Although mainstream consumers are relative unfamiliar with the streaming music category, its popularity is gradually increasing. Competition in the category also started to become stiff with a number of companies offering their own versions of the streaming music service. Aside from Spotify and Beats Music, Prime Music and a number of small startup have also entered the market.

Google revealed that during the anniversary, over 400 million casts, or users sending content into a television from a smartphone, laptop or tablet using the device, were performed. Since the Chromecast dongle is offered in 30,000 stores, millions of units were sold by the company.
