Collapsed Stadium in Brazil Kills Two

After the stadium that was supposed to host the first match of the World Cup held in Brazil in 2014 collapsed this Wednesday, authorities released official data about the casualties. According to the Sao Paolo fire department, two workers were hurt and some injured after a crane collapsed on a stand of the Itaquerao Arena, the place where the 2014 Soccer World Cup is set to debut next summer.

The site was a bee hive of activity as constructors were rushing to finish ahead of their December deadline. Initially the Sao Paolo fire department announced that three workers had passed away in the unfortunate accident, only to correct their initial statement a few hours later.

The crane destroyed a big part of the outer walls of the east side stand and part of a giant LED panel. The accident further delayed work on the worksite, as the stadium’s deadline was going to be cut close without the incident. In fact work on all 12 stadiums is behind schedule with officials in some Brazilian cities admitting that the deadline will have to be pushed as there is no way to finish on time.

FIFA officials said they are shocked by the accident and that their thoughts are with the families of the victims.
