Court Says Former Italian PM Corrupted Witnesses
In a case that has captured world media attention, Italy’s former PM, Silvio Berlusconi is accused of falsifying evidence, bribing state officials and corrupting more than a dozen witnesses in a desperate attempt to stay out of jail.
Berlusconi was found guilty of paying to have sex with an underage prostitute in June and convicted to 7 years of jail time while also being banned from taking public office.
The judge that presided over the case said he found the former politician’s behavior both before and during the case as consistently delinquent. He said Berlusconi falsified evidence on more than one occasion and paid witnesses to influence their testimony.
The two year case was a media delight as the 77 year old politicians “bunga bunga” parties where women, often prostitutes competed to impress Berlusconi made the front page in several international media publications.
During the duration of the case, allegations that the politician held multiple sex themed parties complete with strippers and prostitutes dressed as nuns scandalized Italians and created a veritable field day for the press.
The sentence is suspended until Berlusconi has exhausted his appeals with the earliest appeal date being set in early 2014. Silvio Berlusconi was found guilty more than once for paying for sex with prostitutes some being under-aged.
