Cyber Security Concerns Aired By Chinese Official

A Chinese cyber security official revealed that they have a good amount of data showing US hacking attacks against China. However, the official revealed that he will encourage cooperation in the fight against hacking instead of a confrontation.

US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet in California, and Obama is expected to tell Xi that the US thinks that Beijing is behind all cyber attacks emanating from China. China may also be asked to act on stopping cyber espionage activities launched from China.

However, the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team or CNCERT head, Huang Chengqing, indicated that US concerns on cyber security can be handled through communication instead of confrontation.

Huang indicated that they can opt to make accusations against the US, however this will not resolve the issue. He said that the US did not let China know about the issue that concerned them. Instead they turned to the media. Some of the concerns would have been resolved if the US talked with them.

Huang added that CNCERT has worked with the US after they received some cyber security cases during the first four months of the year. The cases were promptly handled with the exception of some that did not have adequate evidence.

A report from the Washington Post last month indicated that over two dozen US weapons systems were compromised by hackers from China. The report revealed the attack compromised designs for combat ships and aircraft along with missile defense systems.

The report was not denied by Huang although he suggested that the US should prevent online access for weapons systems that the US wants to secure. Huang added the cyber attacks originating from the US had the same seriousness as the accusations made by Washington.

CNCRT revealed that around four thousand computers based in the US affected the cyber security of nearly three million Chinese mainframe computers.
