Cyberespionage Conducted By China According Pentagon Report

The Pentagon revealed that extensive cyberespionage was conducted by the Chinese military and government that targeted the computer networks of the US government and US companies.

In 2012, a computer intrusion campaign was conducted by China to obtain information about the military plans and foreign policy of the US government, the annual report of the Pentagon to Congress revealed. The report revealed that the capability of exploiting computer networks was used by China to support the collection of intelligence on economic, defense, and diplomatic sectors that provide support to the national defense programs of the US.

The report added that many computer systems across the world, including some US government computer systems have been targeted, and some of these intrusions can be traced back to the government and military institutions of China.

These allegations were made by US officials in the past, but the latest report provides the strongest indications that linked cyberespionage to China. The report shows that the hacking activity was both resourceful and organized.

The report added that China keeps on leveraging foreign investments, academic exchanges, joint business ventures, experience of students and researchers who were sent back, and available expertise to provide support for research and development.

Last March, the US government insisted that the cyberespionage campaign of China should be ended. The activity may ruin efforts in building stronger links between the two nations.

A huge percentage of cyberattacks directed against companies, government institutions, and organizations in the US were traced to an office building near Shanghai, a recent report revealed. The building was linked to the People’s Liberation Army. However, the Chinese government denied these allegations and criticized the report since it did not have any verifiable evidence.

A number of companies, including Facebook, Microsoft and Apple, have reportedly been the target Chinese hackers who conducted cyberespionage activities that lasted for a number of months.
