Cynthia Lennon Passes Away At 75

The former wife of John Lennon, Cynthia Lennon, passed away at the age of 75 in Mallorca, Spain, according to a representative of her son. She was fighting cancer before she died at her home with her son, Julian Lennon, at her bedside. Julian tweeted about the death of his mother.


Cynthia and John were married from 1962 until 1968. The Beatles legend was killed in 1980 when he was forty years old. The impact of Cynthia on the Beatles was not quite noticeable. The young-and-single image of the group was put at risk when she became pregnant with Julian. The marriage of John and Cynthia was arranged by Brian Epstein, the manager of the Beatles, with a condition that it will be kept a secret. Despite the secrecy, the British music press was very much aware about it.

Cynthia Lennon revealed through her book “A Twist of Lennon” that her marriage to John Lennon was an “undercover existence.” She also said that she was alone on her wedding night since the Beatles were out in a concert held in Chester.

But, her presence is notable in a number of songs of the Beatles. Julian was the inspiration of the songs “Good Night” and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” It was written when Cynthia and John were married. “Hey Jude” of Paul McCartney was written to comfort Julian following the separation of his parents.

Cynthia was the youngest daughter of Charles and Lillian Powell. She met John while attending the Liverpool College of Art in 1957. Following the divorce, Cynthia revealed that she did not have a stable income. She also said she was being mistreated by John during their marriage.

Cynthia Lennon was described by Hunter Davis as a “lovely woman” who was not treated properly by her husband. Davies is the person who wrote the only authorized biography of the Beatles. He indicated that Cynthia was quiet, reserved and calm, and was not a hippy.

She auctioned the writings of John in 1991, including memorabilia collected by the famous Beatle through the years. She revealed that even though she enjoyed those things for thirty years, it was time for change.

Cynthia said during an interview in 1988 that she and John were attracted to each other since they lost their parents when they were young. She was described to be an eternal optimist during the interview. Cynthia Lennon also revealed that she wanted the interview to be a culmination of the different sides of John Lennon without anything being smoothened over.
