David Letterman Pokes Fun At NBC And Jay Leno
The announcement of the replacement of Jay Leno at the Tonight Show by NBC recently became the center of attention of David Letterman at his show.
It can be recalled that Leno won over Letterman in 1992 in a contest on who would succeed Johnny Carson. Letterman left CBS soon after this setback. He said in his opening monologue that his mom called him and told him that she did not get the hosting job at the “Tonight Show” again.
David Letterman added that it felt like déjà vu after Conan O’Brien replaced Leno earlier. The replacement lasted around eight months.
He said that this is the second time Jay Leno is being replaced with a younger host. He added that although the official date of departure of Leno was announced, the official return date was not announced. However, he is not counting Leno out since he was able to get another job in a different network that had a bigger viewership and higher ratings, Univision.
On the other hand, Jay Leno did not back down from the monologue of Letterman. He said that he called up David Letterman to tell him that he was not able to get the hosting job at the Tonight Show once again. Leno also commended Jimmy Fallon, indicating that he is a great guy who will do a great job. However, he also took a shot at NBC saying that they worked hard to get the network to fifth place, and that they should make sure that they maintain it.
On the other hand, Conan O’Brien congratulated Jimmy Fallon since the job is a fun gig, even as the audience was laughing knowingly. He had a brief stint on the show before Leno replaced him. O’ Brien did not take shots at Jay Leno or the network, unlike what David Letterman did on his show.
