Deron Williams undergoes wrist surgery

Deron Williams of the New Jersey Nets will undergo wrist surgery and will not play for the remainder of the NBA regular season.

Considered one of the premier point guards in the league today, Williams injured his right wrist back in January when he was still with the Utah Jazz.

The Nets traded for Deron Williams before the deadline in February after determining through an MRI that the damage was not permanent.

New York City's The Hospital for Special Surgery conducted another more specialized MRI on the wrist of Deron Williams on Wednesday and discovered some bone fragments.

The Nets announced the surgery before tipoff of Sunday's game between the Nets and the New York Knicks at Newark.

Deron Williams tried to play through the pain when he was traded because he said he felt it was his obligation to play for the Nets.

The team said his decision to play did not worsen the injury. "The doctor told me some of those particles had been there for a while, so you could tell he didn't do any more damage," Nets general manager  Billy King said.

He did not specify the timetable for the recovery but said the surgery will be done on an outpatient basis. Deron Williams was reportedly surprised about the real extent of his injury but was willing to have it repaired it now with the Nets out of playoff contention.

Nets power forward Kris Humphries, guard Sundiata Gaines and forward Damion Jones are also injured like Deron Williams.
