“Despicable Me 2” Tops Fourth Of July Weekend Box Office
The Fourth of July weekend was quite lucrative for “Despicable Me 2” as it earned $82.5 million over the weekend.
In comparison, “The Lone Ranger” was only able to come up with $29.4 million despite opening on the same day as the animated movie. The western movie of Disney starring Johnny Depp may become one of the biggest flops of the year.
Ticket sales of the animated movie featuring the voice of Steve Carell reached $142.1 million in its first five days on the big screen. This is the biggest five-day debut for an animated movie on record. This is higher than the $141 million tickets sales that “Toy Story 3” was able to get in 2010.
On the other hand, ticket sales of the “The Lone Ranger” only reached $48.8 million, which is half of what analyst anticipated for the movie.
Rottentomatoes.com indicated that “Despicable Me 2” was recommended by many critics. Similarly, a good number of fans enjoyed watching the movie. CinemaScore also revealed that the minions also received an A from moviegoers. The results also provide a positive sign for a spinoff for the minions in 2014, according to Boxofficeprophets.com analyst, Tim Briody.
He indicated that the performance of the movie is not easy to belittle since “Despicable Me 2” surpassed the opening of the original within two days. Box Office Mojo analyst also said the effective marketing campaign of Universal Pictures allowed the company to continue the Despicable brand.
Although the franchise is not as familiar as the Toy Story franchise, it was able to reach this level after only one movie.
On the other hand, “The Lone Ranger” may be the second flop in two years for Disney following “John Carter,” which only copped $73 million in domestic ticket sales last year.
Rounding up the top five with “Despicable Me 2” and “The Lone Ranger” are “Heat,” “Monsters University,” and “World War Z.”
