Diane Sawyer Steps Down As World News Anchor
Diane Sawyer stepped down as anchor of “World News” on ABC on Wednesday. The news icon told viewers that she felt wonderful being the home port of the news team every weeknight.
David Muir is set to replace the 68-year-old news icon. Sawyer is among the best-known personalities in television news. She anchored the flagship newscast of ABC since December 2009.
Although it was already known that this was the last week of Sawyer as the anchor of the show, it was not clear whether she will anchor the show for the entire week. Her recent tweet indicated that she will not anchor the show on Thursday and Friday. Sawyer talked with Muir during the newscast on Wednesday. She also gave viewers of the show a behind-the-scenes tour showing the people behind “World News.”
Diane Sawyer also told viewers that it was wonderful to feel like she was in a conversation with her viewers about the events during the day every single night. Although the news for the night was not good, Sawyer revealed she has the same confidence of her viewers that things are going to become better.
The news icon also praised Muir. She said Muir is her friend and her viewers are in good hands with him.
Even though she signed off as anchor of “World News,” Sawyer is not retiring. She revealed that she will go up the stairs and take up a job as a reporter. The news icon may compete for big interviews within the network. She is expected to get additional leeway with the retirement of Barbara Walters.
“World News” recently increased its popularity among younger viewers. It was second in ratings to the “Nightly News” of NBC, which is anchored by Brian Williams, during the most of the tenure of Diane Sawyer.
