Disastrous Dallas Cowboys season start got Phillips sacked

The Dallas Cowboys fired head coach Wade Phillips after he guided the team to a disappointing 1-7 start to the season, a far cry from the team’s lofty goal of playing in the Super Bowl in their new $1.2 billion arena.

Jason Garrett, the team’s offensive coordinator, was named by Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones as the interim coach during a press conference held yesterday.

“There was a lot of me in denial for at least the last couple of ballgames,” Jones said. “At this time what I believe is in the best interests of the organization and fans is a coaching change.”

“They should not think in any way that this is an admission of defeat or finality for this season,” Jones said, while saying that the team will do its best to win its remaining eight games.

Jones said that Garrett’s performance would be evaluated during the course of the next games where he is expected to restore the team to its winning ways. The 44-year-old joined the team in 2007. He then became offensive coordinator and was appointed as assistant head coach in January 2008. He turned down coaching offers from other NFL teams to stay in Dallas.

Meanwhile, Paul Pasqualoni, the defensive line coach, is the new coordinator of the porous Cowboys’ defense which has allowed 232 points in the first eight games of the season.

Phillips led the Cowboys to a 33-15 record over the past three years and entered his fourth season with the team that was considered a legitimate contender for the Super Bowl. Las Vegas Sports Consultants had put them as third-favorite to win it all but downgraded the team’s odds to 1,000 to 1, after the Cowboys dropped five straight games.
