Discovered corpses heightened Syrian killings

30 people were killed in a wave of sectarian bloodshed over the weekend in central Syria. According to activists, the killings were brought about by the discovery of three mutilated corpses. The event escalated the violence which is being experienced by the country for the last four months. Furthermore, the killings were also said to be in connection to the uprising of certain sects which are against President Bashar Assad’s regime, Assad and the ruling elite belong to the Alawite sect and the majority of Syrians are Sunni Muslims.

The dismembered bodies of three Alawite government supporters were discovered in Homs last Saturday, the said city has become a focal point of the uprising, according to Rami Abdul-Rahman, the director of the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. After the incident, six bodies, this time from various sects were also found in the city of Homs and residents confirm that they were done as an act of revenge, causing the shabiha or the pro-government thugs to go on a rampage, opening fire in predominantly Sunni neighborhoods.

Almost 40 shops were vandalized or burned and although activists in Homs are giving information they still assumed anonymity for fear of retribution. In the end, the government is still faced with a great challenge to solve the killings. The opposition, on the other hand, is still struggling to have a unified front regarding the matter while the tension between the religions is still growing.
