Electric Zoo Music Festival Cancelled Due To Deaths
The death of two concertgoers resulted to the cancellation of the Electric Zoo music festival on Sunday. The two concertgoers appeared to have died of a drug overdose. Another four concertgoers were in critical condition. The festival attracts thousands of concertgoers to Randall’s Island in New York City.
New York City officials gave a recommendation of cancelling the event’s third day, which was agreed upon by the organizers of the Electric Zoo music festival.
The actual cause of death was not yet determined in the two cases. However, the deaths may have involved the use of MDMA, which is one type of ecstasy. Ecstasy is an illegal drug that comes in crystal or powder form. It is often referred to as Molly.
A statement from New York City officials revealed that the organizers of the Electric Zoo music festival collaborated with city officials in an effort to minimize health risks during the event. However, the latest developments compelled the cancellation of the last day of the event.
One of the two concertgoers who died in the event was Jeffrey Russ of Rochester, New York. The second concertgoer was a twenty-year-old woman from Rhode Island. The statement also indicated that the four concertgoers who were critically ill are currently in intensive care.
The event started on Friday prior to the Labor Day weekend. Over 100,000 people attended the festival last year, which was held on the island located on the East River of New York City. Around 125 acts were supposed to perform, including Krewella, Avicii, and David Gueta.
A statement from the organizers revealed that the founders of the event would like to send their deepest condolences to the family of the two people who died over the weekend. It added that since the patrons are important for the organizers, they have decided to cancel the last day of the Electric Zoo music festival after it consulted the Parks Department of New York City.
