Electronic Devices May Yet Affect Quality Of Sleep

Electronic devices have never been easier to use nor have they offered more services and entertainment options. Most people love using their electronic devices in their bedrooms, most of the time right up until they go to sleep.

Whether they are used for news, e-books, games or simply to check emails or other social platforms they have made themselves an irreplaceable part of life, and, according to a National Sleep Foundation poll 95 percent of Americans use at least one electronic device before they go to sleep.

The same poll found that in 2013, 89 percent of all U.S. adults and 75 percent of children have at least one electronic device in their bedrooms. The most popular were TV’s, tablets, smartphones and MP3 players.

These electronic devices interfere with sleep in more than one way. The biggest and most common problem is that while left on they can emit light or noise that will disrupt natural sleep cycles and end up altering sleep hormone levels. In some cases it has been noted that light from these devices can simulate daylight conditions stopping the body from producing melatonin, a sleep regulating hormone.

According to a 2013 study that was published in the Behavioral Sleep Medicine journal computers and mobile phones used before bedtime are associated with insomnia.
