Ex-Afghan President killed by Suicide bomber
Kabul, Afghanistan — Burhanuddin Rabbani, ex-Afghan President, was killed Tuesday via an assassination plot when a suicide bomber successfully detonated a bomb concealed in his turban, officials confirmed. Also killed were 4 of the former Afghan leader’s bodyguards while a key adviser of the president was seriously wounded.
The assassination attack has caused Hamid Karzai, the incumbent Afghan President, to prematurely end his presidential visit in the United States upon hearing the news. The attack was a hard blow to the current administration’s peace efforts after the country had escaped a decade of war. The suicide bomber was able to enter Rabbani’s residence in Kabul Tuesday evening where he blew the bomb hidden in his turban, Mohammad Zahir, chief investigation officer of Kabul police, said.
Rabbani will always be remembered for his efforts towards a peaceful solution after his country was torn by a decade of war. He headed Afghanistan’s High Peace Council. Rabbani became the Afghan President after the Taliban rule.
His death signifies that peaceful and diplomatic negotiations with the rebels will be harder than expected for the current administration. Insurgencies in Afghanistan will continue to plague the nation as ethnic and regional rivalries will worsen as well. Political stability and progress of the whole nation of Afghanistan will be far from being realized unless situations like this will be eliminated by the government.
