Famous Roman Statue Vandalized
Roman Statue Vandalized. Rome — A man was detained after confessing he had knocked two marble chunks off in a statue in famous Piazza Navona of Rome and also had tried to inflict damage in nearby fountain of Trevi, police said Monday. During a routine police patrol late Sunday, the suspect was caught near Piazza Navona.
The man who was captured has worn white sneakers, exactly the same shoes worn by the suspect when the vandalism was committed as shown in recorded security camera footage. The police had noticed him the following day and confirmed he was the same man in reference to the images captured by a security and surveillance camera footage.
Gianni Alemanno, city mayor of Rome, showed no clemency for the caught violator. Alemanno said that it is the responsibility of each residents of Italy to protect its historic, artistic and cultural heritage and each violation must be given exemplary punishment.
As shown in the footage, the man climbed the Moro Fountain located at the southern end of the famous Piazza Navona and attacked the statue a couple of times early Saturday morning. He used a large cobblestone before walking away like nothing happened. Restoration works has started Monday to repair the damages and reattach the removed parts of the statue.
