Fashion Comes First In The Gangster Squad Movie
One scene in the “Gangster Squad” movie gave it rather unwanted attention following the shootings in Aurora. The scene showed armed men firing through the movie screen.
Even though the scene was removed, it may not have affected anyone who watched the “Gangster Squad” since some observers indicated that the movie itself was less than serious enough to bother anyone.
The movie is set in a post-war Los Angeles where a conflict between Mickey Cohen, played by Sean Penn, and detectives who are set on taking down his group in any way they can.
Although the “Gangster Squad” is based on the book of Paul Lieberman, a reporter from the LA Times, it has the feel of a graphic novel. The movie starts by creating a psycho persona in the character of Cohen, who has another mobster killed in a rather unpleasant manner.
The character of Penn in the “Gangster Squad” has been placed on the borderline of being crazy to some observers, which is something that some expect of the director, Ruben Fleischer of Zombieland fame.
On the other hand, O ‘Mara, who is played by Josh Brolin, is a veteran detective who enlists a team of hard-nosed law enforcers played by Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, and Michael Pena.
The “Gangster Squad” is considered a rather racially diverse group for the movie that is set in the later part of the 1940s. Chief William Parker, who is played by Nick Nolte, forms the actual “Gangster Squad.” In the end, the squad was integrated into the police force only after some tension created between the law enforcers and minorities, which is still felt even up to today.
The movie appears to put style ahead of the story, which has some similarities as “The Untouchables.” Even the production design of another movie, “LA Confidential,” appears to have made its way into the “Gangster Squad,” some observers indicated.
Due to this, the “Gangster Squad” does not become too boring although it appears to be less than original.
