“Fast and Furious 6” Makes A Killing At The Box Office
With the first months of 2013 showing some less than impressive numbers it seems that with the start of summer and premieres like “Fast and Furious 6”, “The Hangover III”, “Iron Man 3”, “The Great Gatsby” and “Star Trek Into Darkness” the numbers have taken a huge increase with one hit outselling the other.
This Memorial Day weekend was all about “Fast and Furious 6” that took the box office top spot with a debut of $120 million, instantly making it Universal Pictures biggest opening weekend release in history.
Add to that the $158 million internationally and the Vin Diesel muscle car, action block buster just seems bigger than ever. And apparently that’s just what the people in charge wanted. Universal executives said that with a movie franchise as big as “Fast and Furious”, the only way to stay relevant is to make the new movies bigger and better than the previous installments.
The other star of Memorial Weekend was the final chapter of “The Hangover” series. With Zach Galiafianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms “The Hangover III” earned a respectable $51.2 million while “Star Trek: Into Darkness” added some $47 million to their sales to complete the podium topped by “Fast and Furious 6”.
