Fighting In Ukraine Escalates
Violence in Ukraine continues to grow as fighting devastated several parts of the Russian-speaking Eastern part for the second day in a row. This Tuesday was marked by an Ukrainian army attack on the rebel held city of Slaviansk, located near the Russian border.
The attack resulted in dead and wounded on both sides according to the Ukrainian government, with pro-Russian rebels registering more losses than Ukrainian army personnel. Slaviansk is one of the main basis for pro-Russian rebels and the place where an Ukrainian helicopter was shot down causing the death of 14 soldiers just a week ago.
Rebels that still hold the city declared that they managed to bring down a Su-25 attack aircraft as well as a helicopter in this Tuesday’s fighting, however, the Ukrainian government did not confirm the news. According to Ukrainian spokesman Vladyslav Seleznyov, 12 hours after the attack on the city of Slaviansk and a number of key surrounding positions two Ukrainian solders were killed with 42 wounded.
Seleznyov also said that separatist registered heavy losses with 300 people being wounded or killed. The figures that are yet to be confirmed. He confirmed, however, that fighting will continue until the city is back under Ukrainian control.
Recently elected Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ordered the attack while he also accused Moscow of supplying volunteer fighters that cross the border into Ukraine and fight alongside the rebels.
