First 3D Printed Office Building Unveiled In Dubai
Due to issues when it comes to logistics, 3D printing has yet to be used extensively in architecture. However, the idea appears to be in the works. The Museum of the Future project of Dubai is working on the first 3D-printed office building in the world on a space measuring 250 square meters or 2,700 square feet. The first 3D printed mansion and apartment building was unveiled by China in 2015.
The project was initially announced in June of last year. Its main objective is to demonstrate the commitment of the United Arab Emirates to innovation. The country has also set its sight on the future and wants to promote itself as the leader when it comes to 3D printing in the world.
UAE Prime Minister and Vice President and the Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum revealed that they are implementing their plans and pursue actions rather than theories. He added the rapid changes in the world made it necessary for them to increase their rate of development since history favors achievements rather than plans.
A special cement mixture was used in the 3D printer used in printing the building one layer at a time. Printing the entire building took seventeen days and costs run up to around $140,000. Once the building was completed, the details of the interior and exterior were added.
The 3D printer was monitored by a single individual while the installation of the different components of the building required seven people to work on-site. Ten electricians as well as other specialists took care of the engineering requirements of the building. The total number of people required to put up the building represented a 50-percent savings in typical labor costs.
The Dubai Future Foundation will be temporarily housed in the building. The 3D printed building in Dubai can be used for workshops, exhibits and similar events in the future.
