Fish oil Unrelated to Child’s Intelligence

New York — A new study has been released invalidating an earlier misconception linking intake of fish oils during pregnancy and a child’s intellect. Although there are some evidence that fish oil intake during pregnancy might help in the child’s brain development but it does not help making the child increase its level of intellect at 6 years old.

The recent findings support other study conducted earlier by Norwegian researchers inferring that no changes or remarkable improvement in IQ among 7 year old whether their mothers take or did not take fish oil supplements while breastfeeding and in while still pregnant. DHA, one of the known fatty acids, found in fishes and some other foods are known to be very important for developing babies inside the mother’s womb. However, many thought that adding more of this supplement to mother’s diet during pregnancy will help increase the level of intellect among babies.

Researchers have asked pregnant mothers during the 2nd half of their pregnancies to take supplements containing either fish oil or folate: some take both, some either and some did not.  After 7 years, the team of researchers led by a doctor from the Univ. of Granada, Christina Campoy, gave intelligence measure exam to 154 children from the group. The children however performed somewhat similar regardless if their mothers have taken supplements or not during their pregnancy. The results of the study have already been published at the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
