Former New York Mayor Ed Koch Dies At 88

The famous New York mayor Ed Koch who served for three consecutive terms and had an important part to play in bringing New York back from financial ruin died this Friday at the age of 88.

Ed Koch served for three terms from 1978 to 1989 and was recognized as a very charismatic politician that even coined his trademark phrase “How’m I Doin?”.

Koch is said to have almost single handedly saved New York from the economic turmoil it was in during the late 70’s bringing a level of prosperity that made New York one of the best places to live in the U.S.

During Ed Koch's administration, New York also suffered an important facelift, with new buildings and architecture styles that are now the face of the famous city.

All things weren't perfect during Ed Koch’s time as mayor, as AIDS and HIV were skyrocketing, racial tension was high and the city had one of the highest crime rates in its history.

A documentary about his life and time as mayor premiered at the Modern Art Museum this week with Koch being unable to attend due to health problems.

Ed Koch’s cause of death was congestive heart failure, as he died at about 2 AM at New York’s Presbyterian, after a year of being in and out of hospitals.
