Free Service Offered By Sprint To DirecTV Customers
Sprint is offering its service free-of-charge to DirecTV customer for one year as its way of “celebrating” the acquisition of the satellite television company by AT&T. The offer of the fourth biggest wireless service provider includes unlimited text messages, voice calls and 2GB of data. The promo starts on August 28 and will end on September 30.
The move is the latest promotion to be offered in the mobile service industry. T-Mobile earlier removed roaming fees for subscribers who use their smartphones in Mexico and Canada while Verizon stopped offering phone subsidies and service contracts. AT&T also unveiled bundles offering discounts for wireless and satellite TV services.
The offer of Sprint was specifically aimed at AT&T, which thinks its bundles will appeal to customers who will continue to use their service.
However, AT&T did not take the deal of its rival seriously. The company said the promotion is similar to “a desperate Hail Mary pass to a petite defensive lineman.” The company added that the deal has numerous asterisks, and they feel good about their own offers.
Sprint require DirecTV customer to present a copy of a recent bill in order to qualify for its promotion. It will also be necessary for customers to sign up for the leasing program of the company or buy a new smartphone. The leasing program is a monthly installment program for its smartphone offerings. Each household is can sign up for a total of five lines. Chief marketing officer of the company, Kevin Cull, said while DirecTV customers enjoy their TV service, they should not be limited to the offer of AT&T. Due to this, the company offered a bundle that will combine its wireless service for DirecTV customers.
The wireless service may be free, but customers should pay for the cost of the device. It will also be necessary for customer to shell out for a $36 one-time activation fee along with monthly taxes and other fees. The company also said it will buy out existing contracts of customers or pay a maximum of $300 for currently-used smartphones.
After the free one-year subscription, customers will be moved into existing plans that start at $50. The company is confident that customers will continue to use its service after the first year. Even as Sprint has gradually increased its subscriber base, its network is still considered poor when compared to its competitors. However, it has taken steps in improving its service, and has been aggressively encouraging customers to use its service.
