“Frozen” Opens With $15.2 Million On Wednesday
The latest family movie from Disney, “Frozen”, had a notable opening on Wednesday as ticket sales reached $15.2 million in over 4,000 theater locations. This set it on course for an $80 million five-day Thanksgiving debut. Some box office watchers have indicated that ticket sales of the animated movie may reach $90 million.
Walt Disney Animation Studios will come out victorious if the ticket sales reach $70 million since the movie was expected to have a similar opening as “Tangled” in 2010, which reached $68.7 million.
The movie, which is based on “The Snow Queen” of Hans Christian Andersen, portrays a brave princess who goes on an epic journey to look for her sister. Her sister caused an eternal winter due to her icy powers. “Frozen” also performed well over the weekend when it was played at the El Capitan Theater of Disney in Hollywood.
However, the movie is not expected to top “Catching Fire,” which is currently in first placed even with the release of a number of new movies. Ticket sales for the “The Hunger Games” sequel on Wednesday surpassed $20 million. It allowed the movie to go past the $200 million level in the domestic market six days after it was released.
The movie is also expected to top the box office during the Thanksgiving holiday with gross sales ranging from $90 million to $100 million.
Results for other movies after “Frozen” were mixed with some movies doing better in the box office than others.
