Giants pummel Rangers to lead World Series 2-0
The San Francisco Giants, the underdogs throughout the playoffs, are beginning to silence detractors and might just win it all.
The Giants blanked the Texas Rangers 9-0 to win Game 2 of the World Series and grab a 2-0 lead heading to Game 3 in Arlington, Texas on Saturday.
Matt Cain pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings and the Giants made seven runs in the eighth inning to win the game.
San Francisco was just 17th in the league in scoring during the regular season, relying heavily on their pitching to win games. During the division series and the National League Championship Series, the team averaged only three runs every game. Now they have outscored the Rangers 20-7 in the World Series.
“At some point, I knew they were going to get it together and put some runs on the board,” Giants hitting coach Hensely Meulens said. “What better time than now?”
If they were to win the series, the Giants would have been one of the most unlikely champions in World Series history, with a squad of castaways and misfits from other teams.
Their offensive performance on Thursday may be a fluke, but it showed very strong pitching which has become their hallmark this postseason.
Cain, the 26-year old first-round pick of the Giants in 2002, is pitching remarkably well. He has yet to allow a run in 21 1/3 innings in the postseason.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy praised the ace pitcher, saying, “It’s hard to believe he’s 26 years old. He’s the oldest Giant we have here. He’s taken charge, and he’s the guy we want out there in a big game.”
