Global Warming Could Be Cause Of Kidney Stone Surge

The recent meteorological changes and the way the weather is affected by global warming has led to a great deal of changes, one of which is higher temperatures that in turn lead to more sweating and higher rates of dehydration.

This can be one of the main reasons behind the increase in kidney stones according to a recently published study in the Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives.

Researchers said they managed to find a link between excessively hot days and kidney stones in over 60,000 patients hailing from cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles or Philadelphia.

Gregory Tasian, a pediatric urologist at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia said that as daily temperatures begin to rise so will the incidence of patients that come to the hospital with kidney stones in the course of a 20 day period.

The study showed that as temperatures climbed over 50 degrees (10 C) so did the risk of kidney stones in all major American cities except Los Angeles. The research also showed that when comparing average temperatures of 50 F and 86 F (10 C – 30 C) kidney stone risk rose by 38 percent in Atlanta, 37 percent in Chicago and Dallas while in Philadelphia it increased by a whopping 47 percent. Los Angeles saw an increase of just 11 percent when average temperatures soared.
